This simple and fun project will have you creating your very own soft toy companion. We will provide everything you need to make a weird or whimsical creature of your own imagination.

School Holiday Program & more great classes...

The kids school holiday program will return next holidays with sewing and craft classes suitable for children and teens. Led by local designers and craftspeople, this program has been coordinated with a focus on our responsibility to recycling and purchasing materials locally.  Fill up those spare holiday hours learning new skills, exercising your creativity and making new friends, in a fun and social environment. 

The classes below are not currently scheduled, but are an example of classes that may be held dring the holiday program and school term. These classes are all available upon request. Simply get together a group of 4 or more and we can schedule a class or a private booking for your group.

Sewing Basics Module 1: Let’s start at the very beginning

For those who are completely new to sewing. This class will be led in a simple and easy to follow format. First you will be acquainted with the sewing machine and its features, dials and buttons. You will learn to confidently set up the machine for sewing ‐ how to insert a needle, thread the machine, and wind and load a bobbin. In the second half of the class you will make your own sewing satchel, whilst learning handy construction tips.

Sewing Basics Module 2: Zips & Buttonholes

Learn to finish your garments with working and professional looking closures. This class will give you the information you need to confidently sew in zippers and buttonholes. After this class, there'll be no stopping you!

Recycled & Retro Jewellery 8+

Combine fabrics, felt and thread to make endless varieties of brooches,badges or tags. Thread Den provides lots of retro odds and ends and a range of pattern shapes.
Class introduces cutting from a pattern, assembling and hand sewing.

‘Design and make your own Teddies’. Soft toy making 9+

Learn the basics of soft toy design, pattern making and construction using a range of easy hand stitches. Leave this class with the skill to customize soft toys and take home a new friend.

Screen Printing 12+

Take your own designs and turn them into unique fabric, T-shirts and more. Using your own design, you will learn to screen print this image onto your chosen fabric or piece of clothing.

BYO: Please bring a light coloured t-shirt, a piece of fabric, or other items you wish to print onto. Also bring along your own designs or photocopies to make into a stencil. You can also draw your own image in class.

Badge Making 5+

Get creative and make badges and brooches your friends will love. Use your own drawings, your favourite paper, or even pages from used books or magazines to create clever badge designs. Or bring along some buttons, trinkets and other found objects to create brooches with glue, thread and brooch backs supplied by us. Your Thread Den teacher will then help you to transform your designs into badges and brooches you can wear over and over.

BYO: Anything you might like to turn into a badge or brooch. Thread Den will also have materials on hand for students to use. We will be using a 25mm badgemaker.
Thread Den teachers will complete the final ‘badge pressing’ steps for young children.

Refashion Your Vintage Fashion 12+

How many great vintage fashions do you have sitting on the mending pile because they’re 'not quite right'? Don’t have the time or know-how to make them fit you properly? Well put it off no longer! Come to this class and we'll work together to bring those refashioning ideas to life.

1 x 2 hour session

Learn to sew with stretch fabrics & create your own Tee 10+

Create and customise your own oversized tee shirt! This fashionable tee has that sloppy joe look with a raw edge finish, you can embellish by cutting slits or adding extra stitching. This class is a fun introduction to stretch sewing and using the overlocker.

Sling Bag Making 13+

Want to make your own bag? Bring along your own special fabric to create a unique bag. Once you've made one there's no stopping you!
All sewing equipment is provided by Thread Den, but please bring along fabric to make your bag. A great selection of unique vintage fabric is also available for purchase in store.

Crochet Mobile Phone or Ipod Bag 13+

Fashion Illustration - Teens & Adults

This class offers a fun and relaxed environment where you learn the basics and basis of fashion drawing. You will be provided with fashion templates to get you started on your own designing. You will also learn how to build your own templates.
The course aims to provide an understanding of how important illustration is to the garment making process, and is a great start to building your own fashion folio.

1 X 4 hour class - with a half hour break for lunch.

Personalised Clutch 13+

Designed to keep a camera safe, this little purse could also be used for an Ipod or phone – or anything you might like to keep inside really. We will provide you with a simple pattern, and show you how to make your own pattern in other sizes – so you can make this purse to protect all your treasures. Another great project for using up any small pieces of fabric you might have, and a great hand-made gift idea.
